Regional Preparations

As part of the Summit process, the six UN regions of the world were asked to organize regional meetings to funnel into the global PrepComs in a bottom--up fashion.

Europe and North America

The US a part of the "Europe and North America" region; the regional meeting was organized by the UN Economic Commission for Europe. Several other subregional meetings were held, including the "Eminent Persons" roundtable in Vail, Colorado.

US Preparations

National preparations, including a National Preparatory Committee, country profile, and national assessment, were also requested of each country by the UN. The US government put together an inter-agency working group for WSSD, but convened no official multistakeholder preparatory committee. A number of civil society organizations came together to form the US Citizens Preparatory Committee in response, and have been organizing various meetings and consultations over the past year. A 156 page country profile report [PDF] was done by the US, but no assessment of progress over the past ten years was developed.

Multilateral Agencies

In addition to country governments, UN agencies which have regional offices, such as UNEP-RONA (UN Environment Program Regional Office of North America) have also been involved in their own preparation activities.

Other Regions

You can find more general information about preparations in other regions on the Johannesburg Summit website.
