At the end of this month (January 28-February 8) governments from around
the world will send their delegations to New York for the Second Global
Preparatory Meeting (PrepCom II) for the World Summit on Sustainable
Development (WSSD).
The regional preparatory meetings and roundtables have now all taken
place -- reviewing progress, assessing obstacles and identifying next
steps to achieve the 1992 Earth Summit's vision and program of action
to achieve a sustainable world. To begin the discussion, the Secretary
General recently released his report "Implementing Agenda 21"
(See http://www.johannesburgsummit.org/web_pages/sgreport_summit_preparations_unedited.pdf
)
Now representatives from governments, citizen groups, industry, trade
unions, women, youth, scientists, indigenous peoples, farmers, and others
form each of these regions will go to the United Nations with their
ideas of what needs to be done next.
* Where does the USA stand with the rest of the world in examining
its progress in implementing Agenda 21?
* What messages will the US government and its citizens bring to the
UN to share with the governments and citizens of other regions?
* What messages do YOU want US civil society to bring to this meeting?
AGENDA
1:00 - 2:00 Briefing on US government preparations and discussion with
Jonathan Margolies of the State Department and other members of the
US Delegation to the WSSD.
2:00 - 3:30 Discussion of US NGO strategies and plans for the upcoming
PrepCom. What do we want to accomplish? What is possible? What role
and opportunities will civil society have in shaping the agenda and
shaping the outcomes? What role will US NGOs play?
