These public forums will provide opportunities for a serious discussion
by all interested people to explore and seek agreement on actions that
lead to heightened community involvement and effectiveness toward
sustainability in the District of Columbia. People expected to
participate in these unique dialogue settings include community
development organization representatives, environmental scientists,
architecture and design specialists, conservationists, builders, business
developers, planners, educators, bankers, human service providers,
government policy-makers, community residents, workforce trainers, social
justice advocates, and representatives of faith-based organizations.
The group of organizations sponsoring the March 26th Forum has as its
goal to enhance networks and encourage partnering so we may further
the
ability of all participants to become engaged in the search for common
understanding concerning the best pathways to sustainable community
development in the DC area. This series of forums is intended to put
us
on the path for making DC the sustainability showplace of the Nation
--
a place where the best practices from other settings can be applied
so
the sum total of sustainable practices is greater than anywhere else.
By bringing together many different groups, the forum sponsors believe
positive change will occur in the arena of public dialogue in a manner
that links critical economic, environmental, and social justice issues
for our region.
The "Dialogue on Sustainable Development" Forum agenda will
include the
following:
- "Reasons for Considering Sustainable Development" --
Lester Brown
has been invited to present a brief overview on this topic. - "Setting the Sustainable Development Context" -- by the
Forum
sponsors that would delve into the principles and specifics of
sustainability from the individual's point of view. - Roundtable Dialogue engaging forum participants on WHAT
SUSTAINABILITY MEANS TO ME. Report back to whole forum on key
points for describing sustainability.
