Values & America's future

Freedom & sustainability
Few people realize how important sustainability is to freedom. Is our dependence on fossil fuels and Middle East regimes undermining our freedom? The 4th of July holiday is a good opportunity to reflect upon what the concept of freedom means to us--especially at a time it is used to justify war and spend billions of tax dollars on policies ironically constricting American liberties.
Pitfalls & potentials for localism
Local action continues to be one of the pillars of sustainable development. Yet localism has its limitations, especially if it ignores global realities. James Rochow shares his views of how interlocal communication and intiatives with counterparts in other parts of the world can enhance both local and global progress towards sustainability.
Rearranging the system
If we are to reorganize our socio-economic systems to live in ecological, lower energy, more self-reliant and self-sufficeint communities, we need mechanisms to change the way resources are allocated to and within our communities. Mike Morin discusses a new paradigm for funding cooperative community development.
Acknowledgements
Thank you SURFREE for keeping CitNet afloat!
During the past four and a half years, the SURFREE Foundation has generously supported CitNet's work, allowing us to produce this newsletter, develop the website, support local and regional sustainability intiatives around the country, host consultations and delegations to international events, and other activities. As of this last December, SURFREE has now closed its doors. We would like to especially thank John and Libby Morse, now in their nineties, who founded SURFREE and helped support hundreds of sustainability initiatives and organizations around the US, and who provided an inspiring example to us all of dedicated leadership for sustainability.
