Feb. 26 & 28 Brown Bag Briefings/Dialogues on
National Report on Sustainable Forests

You are invited to attend a 'brown bag' briefing and dialogue sponsored by the Roundtable on Sustainable Forests to share plans to develop the nation's first National Report on Sustainable Forests and to learn about the work of the Roundtable. The Roundtable is a forum for public and private groups and individuals to share approaches and perspectives on sustainable forest management. The briefing will feature a diversity of perspectives on how the U.S. can move toward sustainable management of our forests.

The Roundtable is gathering input for the National Report on Sustainable Forests due out in Fall 2002. The USDA Forest Service is leading a collaborative effort with eleven federal agencies to gather and analyze information for this historic report. The process of collecting and assessing data for the report using a set of 7 Criteria and 67 Indicators is underway and public input is being solicited to help ensure that the concerns and interests of non-federal entities are considered. Since two thirds of U.S. forests are privately owned, input and participation in sustainable forest management by nongovernmental organizations, conservation groups, state and local governments, tribes and the forestry profession are critical to helping the U.S. move towards sustainable forests.

Please come learn about this new approach to assessing the condition of our nation's forests and share your perspectives on future directions. Please choose one of the following two briefings which best meets your interests. Please RSVP to kef8w@virginia.edu by February 22 and indicate which briefing you plan to attend. We hope to see you there and please feel free to invite your colleagues!
