For America to become a sustainable society, it is critical for its citizens to develop a clear understanding and appreciation of sustainability as it relates to their personal security and quality of life, as well as the future of the nation and humanity. For 2009, "sustainability" is identified among the top ten policy issues viewed as having the greatest impact on public higher education institutions across the 50 states, according to the state policy analysis and research staff of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU).
