This meeting is specifically in response to the call by US NGOs begun before the World Summit and continued in Johannesburg to build a national campaign to promote sustainability in America.

Throughout the WSSD process, the topic of "leadership" continually came up. One idea is to focus on the need for leadership on sustainability at the national, state and local levels. To what degree are the current candidates for election in November talking about sustainability? How can we make this a priority in the different states and regions around the country?

Suggested topics:

  • communicating the message about sustainability to the American public;
  • highlighting sustainability issues in the fall elections;
  • linking sustainability and corporate accountability;
  • highlighting sustainability priorities at the upcoming WTO meetings in Cancun in 2003;
  • environmental justice as a key element of sustainable development;
  • creating a sustainability clearinghouse;
  • building alliances and links among local and state sustainability campaigns and practices around the country.
